With the World Track and Field Championships being much later in the summer this year, there is still a very packed track calendar leading up to it. This weekend is no different to this with various different events taking place worldwide, yet maybe unsurprisingly the American fixtures this week are not at their usual action packed level with the focus being on the USA Track and Field Championships next week. The main domestic event lyes with the U20/U23 National Championships held, as always, at Bedford. On the European scene there is this years European Team Championships, with this rendition being held in Cheboksary, Russia. What may also be interesting to see this weekend on the roads will be the duel between Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto over the half marathon distance in Czechoslovakia.
The Team Championships are due to take place over both the Saturday and Sunday with the inclusion of all major track and field events. The Great British squad is one of definite strength along with six new names such as young steeplechase star Zak Seddon. Along with Seddon comes a strong distance team with Andy Vernon being the favourite to take gold for GB in the men’s 5000m. Another interesting race will be the 1500m with the Polish 800m specialist, Marcin Lewandowski taking on the longer distance. Sunday’s 800m race may also be an excellent opportunity for Guy Learmonth to re-write his PB when up against a strong field including Adam Kszczot.
Here in the UK this weekend there will be the annual Age group national championships for the U20 and U23 categories. With this comes the possibility of selection for the Great Britain squad for the Junior and U23 European Championships being held later this summer, to gain selection, the athletes will have had to have of met the qualifying standard along with finishing in the top three at this trial.
